Hamburg – european green capital 2011

Begin your tour through the exhibition “Visions for future cities” in carriage 1, where Hamburg is on show as the European Green Capital 2011. There you can learn more about the Hanseatic City’s diverse environmental protection projects. The exhibits allow you to experience Hamburg’s green side: For example, an interactive map gives you an overview of urban development projects and enables you to retrieve targeted information about them.

Take a seat and go on a virtual bus tour through the city. Here you can get to know the projects that made Hamburg the Green Capital. For instance, you will ride through HafenCity and past the Georgswerder “Energy Mountain” in Wilhelmsburg. Audio commentaries explain the individual stations to you. The city tour is shown simultaneously in the info pavilion in Hamburg Central Station. As a result – no matter what city you happen to be in – you can join in a dialog with people in Hamburg via a headset and video.

HAMBURG

Carbon-neutral district
On Europe’s biggest river island in the heart of Hamburg, a globally unique project is currently taking shape: by 2050 the Wilhelmsburg district will have been rebuilt to be carbon-neutral. The basis for this is part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA).

Highway hoods
Where federal highway 7 currently slices through the west of Hamburg, three noise-insulation tunnels will ensure a better quality of life in a few years. The Hamburg hoods will create space for new green areas and connect previously separate districts.

Green city
Hamburg is the German city with the most nature conservation areas. Forest, recreational and green spaces make up 16.7 percent of the area, with over eight percent of the space protected. Even heavily built-up districts are increasingly interlaced with parks.
