Hamburg is European Green Capital 2011
This year Hamburg is the “European Green Capital 2011”. This award by the EU not only recognizes Hamburg’s commitment to environmental issues, but is also motivation for the future.
Four out of five Europeans live in cities, producing more than 75 percent of greenhouse gases there. Thus solutions to the environmental issues of the future must be developed in cities. And it is against this background that the European Commission has launched the idea of the “European Green Capital”. The award recognizes cities that are committed to environmental protection and pursue ambitious goals.
And this year, Hamburg has been named “European Green Capital” by a panel of representatives from the EU and various environmental organizations from among 35 candidates. Hamburg performed well for all ten categories, achieving the highest score in the categories “climate protection”, “sewage” and “administration”.
Hamburg sees itself as a learning city seeking to shape the protection of the urban environment in cooperation with other cities. It is thus sending the “Train of Ideas” across Europe. There will also be many events in Hamburg during the city’s year as “European Green Capital”. More information is available here.
