Deutsche Bahn AG is one of the world’s leading mobility and logistics companies, with some 2,000 offices in around 130 countries. More than 251,000 employees worldwide, including approx. 190,000 in Germany, are committed to ensuring mobility and logistics and the efficient operation of related transport networks on rail and road, as well as sea and air freight.

DB realizes its environmental responsibility
Around one fifth of annual CO2 emissions in Germany are caused by traffic. If Deutsche Bahn’s rail network did not exist, an addition 12 million tons of CO2 would be produced every year. Shifting traffic onto the railways therefore leads to a noticeable reduction.
DB demonstrates impressively that mobility and climate protection are not mutually exclusive. Even very early on, the group ensured it was on course in terms of climate protection, and has therefore already been able to reduce its CO2 emissions from rail transport by more than 40 percent on 1990 levels. The climate protection agenda has now been extended to the entire DB group. The aim is to reduce the specific CO2 emissions on land, on the water and in the air by 20 percent between 2006 and 2020.
DB’s future vision is CO2-free rail transport by the year 2050. The interim target is an increase in the proportion of renewable energy in the rail fuel mix to 30 percent by the year 2020.
Deutsch Bahn as a premium partner of Green Capital Hamburg 2011
Rail, as one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transport, is the ideal partner for the European Green Capital 2011: In Hamburg the local S-Bahn trains have been running on exclusively CO2-free power from German hydroelectric power plants since the start of 2010, as the first German railway company to do so. In this way the S-Bahn cuts the emissions of environmentally harmful carbon dioxide in Hamburg by 60,000 tons a year. In the area of logistics too, Deutsche Bahn ensures that a large proportion of the traffic from the port to the hinterland is taken by rail as the environmentally friendly option.

During 2011, Deutsche Bahn is supporting Hamburg, the European Green Capital, in a variety of ways, such as the logistics for the “Train of Ideas”. As a mobile exhibition, the Train of Ideas will travel across Europe, presenting interesting environmental projects from Hamburg and other cities. Starting in Hamburg, the train will be visiting 17 cities across Europe, with the logistics organized by Deutsche Bahn. Where the exhibition takes place in a public place in a city, local transportation of the containers will be provided by DB Schenker.
The “Train of Ideas” will give an overview of Deutsche Bahn’s range of services, such as CO2-free products and the bicycle rental system StadtRAD, which DB runs in Hamburg in cooperation with the City of Hamburg.
In April, there will be a special exhibition by Deutsche Bahn at the information pavilion headed “Clever driving – clever operation – clever protection” where DB will be presenting their ideas from the “Train of Ideas” in more detail as well as various activities for climate and environment protection.
